Bio: Susan grew up on a farm near the Boreal Forest in Saskatchewan. At an early age, she developed a love for drawing, gymnastics, horses, and being outdoors with nature. After graduating from Business College, she moved to the North West Territories and worked as Travel Agent at Northland Travel. After a year passed by, she missed her family and living on the prairies.  Then she decided to move back to rural Saskatchewan in 1990.
At the age of twenty-six, she met her future husband, John Ewert, who was the owner of a kitchen manufacturing company in Alvena, Saskatchewan.  After a few conversations, she discovered they had both worked as Visual Merchandisers for the Eaton’s Department store in the 1980s. Then after having a cup of coffee with John, she discovered they had both shared the same Supervisor, Al Dyck, even though they had both worked in different cities. She was delighted to find out he was the display person who had set up the ‘Once Upon a Christmas’ display at the Eaton’s store in Saskatoon. In addition, John worked on the display until it was dismantled, and moved to a museum in Saskatoon. You can see the display during the Christmas season at the “Western Development Museum" in Saskatoon.
After they moved to Saskatoon, they met each once again and began dating. Then after two years passed by, they decided to make it official and were married on October 28, 1991.  Throughout their years of marriage, they enjoyed sharing many common threads with each other. They both had a passion for owning small businesses. In addition, during their marriage, they enjoyed creating art, gardening, nature hikes, politics, photography and renovating old houses.
In 2004, they moved to Hawarden after a series of financial setbacks.  Their friend, Gordo Pederson found them a 1906 church that was for sale. Then they sold their home in Saskatoon and purchased the former United Church of Hawarden and an Eaton's catalogue house. Together they renovated both places. After three years of living in the village of Hawarden, John decided to retire from making cabinets when his contract with ‘Pleasure-Way Industries’ was finished.
During his retirement years, he began to design a small compact wind turbine engine. He was not able to finish this project since his health began to decline. After two years of health problems, he was finally, diagnosed with terminal cancer. John lost his battle with cancer on October 24, 2007, when he passed from this world to the next, leaving, only his memories and recollections in all of our hearts.
Susan decided to have her stories illustrated, and through the internet, she found Karen Zvorc Illustration Inc. Karen agreed to illustrate the short stories, and she has magically created all of the lovely illustrations in this storybook.

Bio: Hello! My name is Laarni Mary-Laput, “your home cooking buddy” and welcome to Laarni’s Kitchen and Food Creations.
I was born and raised in South Davao del Sur, Philippines and had the chance to teach high school and college students both public and private institutions.
In May of 1992, I migrated in Toronto, Ontario Canada under Canada’s Immigration Live-in Caregiver Program, and worked both children and elderly care. I stayed and worked in Toronto, Ontario for 17 years and later decided to move with my husband Ulysses and son Lloyd in 2009 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada which I considered being blessed and grateful in the beautiful “homey” place called the Queen’s City- Regina, with its motto “I Love Regina”.
Being a multi-tasked person, mom and wife, I work Monday to Friday as a manager in a privately-owned care home that deals with elderly care. I work 2 other part-time jobs as a Psycho-social Rehabilitation Worker in the addiction Centre and as a Culinary Arts Instructor for the City of Regina. I also do volunteer work within the community as a culinary arts teacher.
A combination of both cooking and baking is very much likely has become a passion to me ever since when I was at a young age. I was 9 years of age when I started how to dress a live chicken in a Kosher way which I could hardly believe how I did it.
Over the period of 2 years, I made a well-hand crafted more than 4000 different cooking and baking sprees which 85% are from my own originality of mixtures and explorations that soar my imaginations in my kitchen’s comfort zone.
During my spare time, I develop recipes, shoot food photos using my cellphone, doing some unedited and non-scripted videos with my non-professional videographer son Lloyd Laput; I love to scribble simple lines about my culinary kitchen experiences from day-to-day which I guess you can say, “I do it for fun."
I would like to share all the wonderful “goodies” I made and well-hand crafted with mixture of love, dedication and commitment as I learn new and exciting stuff from my day-to-day experiences in my “Little Kitchen in the Prairie." My kitchen is a magical place, not just for those with a culinary knack. It is an oasis in the midst of an old small, diverse and loving North Central Community in the neighborhood of Regina.
I consider that food is not only sustenance, but it is also a physical manifestation of culture and emotions. One that is tangible and one that you can taste for the love of good food consists of learning, creating, discovering and having fun while cooking and baking.
In terms of my family meals, they are mostly simple and basic. I am trying to be a vegetarian, yet; "fish" is always a part of my family’s diet as typical Filipinos who eat rice as staple food three times a day.
Personally, cooking, baking and teaching are subjective and inasmuch as I would like to keep my recipes as authentic and as close to home as my recipes and mixtures reflect my personal taste, and they are for you to tweak, as necessary to suit your taste buds.
As always, I love to show off and love to share my simple prepared meals for my family and friends, and that it will give you the utmost tastes and ideas on what to prepare for your loved ones tonight.
I am excited and looking forward ton my first book of various recipes as a project to help and fund the indigenous tribes in the remote part of the Southern Philippines the T’boli tribesmen build “low-cost” small churches made of bamboo and coconut materials serve as their spiritual gathering shelters and also my continuous financial support for the 6 orphan children in Africa for their tuition fees, uniform (clothing) and allowances.
