Mistasiniy is a Cree word for big stone. The story is about two young boys in grade 6 who have a history of not getting along. Suddenly they are forced to work together on a Social Studies project looking at their heritage. Danny is of European descent and he is a 4th generation homesteading family still farming on the same land his great-great grandparents homesteaded in the late 1890s. Zach is a Cree boy who has trouble fitting in at school. Forced to work together, Zach and Danny must put aside their differences. As they begin to work together, they realize they have a lot in common, including a love of the land. However, when Zach tells Danny about a missing Mistasiniy, Danny wonders if it's his big rock Zach is talking about. This story is told in alternating chapters depicting Zach's perspective and then Danny's. It also has some chapters of diary entries written by Danny's Great-great Grandmother, Rose.
